THINGS TO DO IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
HISTORY OF DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Pre-Columbian Era
The island of Hispaniola (which the Dominican Republic shares with Haiti) was originally inhabited by the Taíno, an Arawakan-speaking people.
The Taíno had a complex society with agriculture, fishing, and structured leadership under caciques (chiefs).
Spanish Colonization (1492–1697)
1492: Christopher Columbus landed on Hispaniola during his first voyage. He established the first permanent European settlement in the Americas: La Navidad (which failed), followed by La Isabela, and then Santo Domingo in 1498.
1500s: Santo Domingo became the first seat of Spanish colonial rule in the New World.
The indigenous Taíno population declined rapidly due to diseases, warfare, and forced labor under the encomienda system.
African slaves were imported to replace the indigenous labor force.
French Control and Haitian Influence (1697–1844)
1697: Spain ceded the western third of Hispaniola to France (now Haiti) under the Treaty of Ryswick.
The French side became wealthy due to sugar plantations; the Spanish side (now the DR) remained underdeveloped.
1795: Spain ceded the entire island to France, but control remained unstable.
1804: Haiti declared independence from France after a successful slave revolt.
1822–1844: Haiti, under President Jean-Pierre Boyer, annexed the entire island, unifying it under Haitian rule.
Dominican Independence and 19th Century (1844–1916)
1844: The Dominican Republic declared independence from Haiti on February 27, led by Juan Pablo Duarte and the movement La Trinitaria.
The early republic was unstable, facing threats from both Haiti and internal power struggles.
1861–1865: The DR voluntarily returned to Spanish colonial rule, fearing Haitian invasion.
1865: After the War of Restoration, Dominicans expelled the Spanish and restored independence.
US Occupation and Trujillo Era (1916–1961)
1916–1924: The United States occupied the Dominican Republic to stabilize its finances and government.
1930: Rafael Trujillo came to power in a coup and ruled as a dictator until his assassination in 1961.
His regime was marked by severe repression, a cult of personality, economic modernization, and the massacre of thousands of Haitians in the Parsley Massacre (1937).
Post-Trujillo Era to Present (1961–Present)
1965: Civil war erupted; the US intervened again to prevent a supposed communist takeover.
1966: Joaquín Balaguer, a former Trujillo ally, became president and served multiple terms.
Since the 1990s, the country has had more stable democratic elections.
Recent decades have seen economic growth, urbanization, and increased tourism, but challenges remain in inequality, corruption, and relations with Haiti.
