HISTORY OF ARUBA

Pre-Colonial Period

Caquetio Indians (a branch of the Arawak people) were the island's first known inhabitants, arriving around 1000 A.D. from South America.

They lived in small communities, practiced fishing and farming, and left behind petroglyphs in caves like Fontein Cave and Ayo Rock Formations.

European Discovery and Colonization

1499: Aruba was first seen by Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda, who claimed the island for Spain.

Unlike many Caribbean islands, Aruba had little gold, so it was used mostly for livestock and as a penal colony.

The Spanish ruled for over a century.

Dutch Colonization

1636: The Dutch took control of Aruba during the Eighty Years’ War with Spain.

The island became part of the Dutch West India Company's Caribbean holdings.

The Dutch used Aruba strategically as a supply base and to support shipping routes.

19th Century Changes

Aruba remained under Dutch control despite temporary British occupations during the Napoleonic Wars (1805–1816).

In 1824, gold was discovered in Aruba, sparking a minor gold rush.

In the late 19th century, aloe cultivation became economically significant.

20th Century Development

1924: The Lago Oil & Transport Company (a subsidiary of Standard Oil) established a major oil refinery in San Nicolas, making Aruba a key player in the oil industry.

The refinery brought prosperity and population growth.

Towards Autonomy

Aruba was part of the Netherlands Antilles, a group of Dutch Caribbean islands.

1947: Aruba first requested a separate status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

1986: Aruba gained “Status Aparte”, becoming a separate autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Plans for full independence in 1996 were later shelved.

Modern Era

Aruba developed a tourism-based economy from the late 20th century onward.

It remains an autonomous country in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with its own parliament and government, though defense and foreign affairs are handled by the Dutch.
