HISTORY OF ST. MARTIN AND SINT MAARTEEN

EARLY HISTORY

Indigenous Peoples: The island was originally inhabited by the Arawak and later the Carib peoples. They called it “Soualiga” (Land of Salt) due to the natural salt ponds.

European Discovery: On November 11, 1493, Christopher Columbus sighted the island on St. Martin’s Day, hence the name. However, he did not land.

COLONIAL ERA

Dutch and French Colonization

Both the Dutch and French began to settle the island in the early 1600s, primarily for salt mining (Dutch) and agricultural purposes (French).

After a period of conflict with the Spanish, who briefly took control (1633–1648), both the Dutch and French reasserted their presence.

Treaty of Concordia (1648)

Divided the island between France (north) and the Netherlands (south).

The treaty emphasized peaceful coexistence and mutual defense, although borders changed over time due to skirmishes.

Slavery and Plantation Economy

Both sides imported African slaves for sugar plantations.

Slavery was abolished in 1848 (French) and 1863 (Dutch).

MODERN SAINT-MARTIN (North)

Originally part of Guadeloupe, it became a separate overseas collectivity of France in 2007.

Uses the euro as currency.

Citizens are French nationals and EU citizens.

Official language: French, though English and Creole are widely spoken.

MODERN SINT MAARTEN (South)

Part of the Netherlands Antilles until its dissolution in 2010.

Became a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands on October 10, 2010.

Uses the Netherlands Antillean guilder (though the U.S. dollar is more common).

Official languages: Dutch and English.

HURRICANE IRMA (2017)

One of the worst natural disasters in the island's history.

Caused massive destruction to infrastructure and economy.

Recovery has been slow and uneven between the two sides.

TODAY

Tourism is the primary economic driver for both sides.

The island is one of the smallest land masses divided between two nations.

Known for its cultural diversity, duty-free shopping, beaches, and vibrant nightlife.
