About: The camera faces west toward California and is situated atop the office building of Campbell Cove RV Resort. You are seeing a small portion of a 180-degree panoramic image of Lake Havasu and the California mountains on the other side of the lake if it is daylight. Lake Havasu and the city of Lake Havasu City have one of the most unique and surprising histories in the American Southwest—a story that blends ancient Native cultures, desert engineering marvels, and a world-famous British bridge in the middle of the Arizona desert.

EARLY HISTORY

Indigenous Peoples

The Mohave (or Mojave) people were the region’s original inhabitants for centuries, living along the Colorado River.

They practiced farming, fishing, and trading, with a deep spiritual connection to the land and water.

The name "Havasu" comes from the Mohave word meaning "blue-green water."

1800s EXPLORATION & MILITARY ACTIVITY

American Expansion

In the 1800s, U.S. military expeditions began mapping the region during westward expansion.

The Colorado River served as a key transportation and supply route.

Camp Colorado

During the Civil War, the U.S. Army established Camp Colorado in the area to protect western settlers and river transport.

THE MAKING OF LAKE HAVASU

Parker Dam Construction (1934–1938)

Lake Havasu was created with the construction of the Parker Dam on the Colorado River.

The dam's primary purpose was to store water for pumping into California and Arizona via the Colorado River Aqueduct and Central Arizona Project.

The dam created a 45-mile-long reservoir that straddles the Arizona-California border.

FOUNDING OF LAKE HAVASU CITY

Robert P. McCulloch (1963)

In 1963, Robert P. McCulloch, the chainsaw magnate and entrepreneur, founded Lake Havasu City as a planned community and resort town.

He purchased land on the eastern shore of Lake Havasu with the vision of building a tourist destination in the desert.

THE LONDON BRIDGE ARRIVES (1968–1971)

In a move that captured international attention, McCulloch bought the original London Bridge (built in 1831) from the City of London in 1968.

The bridge was dismantled, shipped stone-by-stone through the Panama Canal, and reassembled in Lake Havasu City by 1971.

The reconstructed London Bridge became the centerpiece of McCulloch’s vision and a global tourist attraction.

A canal was dredged under it, creating Bridgewater Channel, making the desert town famous worldwide.
