HISTORY OF HAWAII

Ancient Hawaii (before 1778)

First Settlement (~1,000–1,200 AD): Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands (and later Tahiti) voyaged thousands of miles across the Pacific to settle the Hawaiian Islands.

Social Structure: Complex society with a caste system — aliʻi (chiefs), kahuna (priests/specialists), makaʻāinana (commoners), and kauwā (outcasts).

Religion and Culture: Deeply spiritual, with gods for nature and daily life; key practices included kapu (sacred laws), hula, and surfing.

European Contact (1778–1810)

1778: British explorer Captain James Cook arrived, marking the first known European contact. He was later killed in 1779 during a conflict with Hawaiians.

Unification of the Islands: Chief Kamehameha I used Western weapons and strategy to unite the islands under a single kingdom by 1810, forming the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Kingdom of Hawaii (1810–1893)

Kamehameha Dynasty: Continued by Kamehameha’s descendants, the kingdom modernized trade and relations with foreign powers.

Christian Missionaries (1820s): Introduced Christianity, Western education, and literacy using a Hawaiian alphabet.

Economic Changes: Sugar plantations became dominant, often controlled by foreign (mostly American) business interests.

Annexation by the U.S. (1898): Despite opposition from many Native Hawaiians, Hawaii was annexed through the Newlands Resolution during the Spanish-American War.

Territory of Hawaii (1900–1959)

Strategic Importance: Key naval base at Pearl Harbor; economy based on sugar, pineapple, and tourism.

Pearl Harbor Attack (Dec 7, 1941): Japanese attack during WWII; led to the U.S. entering the war and martial law in Hawaii.
