HISTORY OF ST. JOHN, USVI
Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Era
Before 1493: St. John was originally inhabited by the Taíno and later the Carib peoples. These Indigenous groups had well-established societies and traveled among the islands in dugout canoes.
They called the island “Booriquen” or something similar, meaning “Land of the Brave People.”
European Discovery and Colonization
1493: Christopher Columbus sighted the Virgin Islands on his second voyage, naming them after St. Ursula and her 11,000 virgins.
St. John remained unsettled by Europeans for over a century due to Carib resistance and its small size.
Danish Colonization
1718: The Danish West India and Guinea Company officially established a settlement on St. John.
The Danes named the island “Sankt Jan.”
Over time, they established sugar plantations, relying heavily on African slave labor.
Slavery and Rebellion
1733: One of the earliest and most significant slave revolts in the Americas occurred on St. John.
Enslaved Akan (from present-day Ghana) Africans seized control of the island for several months.
The rebellion was brutally suppressed by French troops from Martinique.
The island continued to operate with a plantation-based economy until the abolition of slavery.
End of Slavery and Economic Decline
1848: Slavery was abolished in the Danish West Indies.
The plantation economy collapsed soon after due to a lack of labor and global sugar price drops.
Many estates were abandoned, and the population dwindled.
American Acquisition
1917: The United States purchased St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix from Denmark for $25 million in gold.
This move was partly strategic, to prevent German expansion during World War I.
St. John became part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, an unincorporated U.S. territory.
Modern Era and Conservation
1956: Philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller donated over 5,000 acres to the U.S. government.
This led to the creation of the Virgin Islands National Park, which now covers over 60% of St. John.
Tourism became the island’s main industry, emphasizing eco-tourism, hiking, and marine conservation.
Recent Developments
2000s–2010s: Growth in sustainable tourism, high-end resorts, and environmental advocacy.
2017: Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused massive damage, but the community has steadily rebuilt.
Today, St. John is known for its natural beauty, preserved ruins, coral reefs, and rich Afro-Caribbean heritage.
