HISTORY OF AKUMAL
Akumal, meaning "Place of the Turtles" in the Mayan language, is a small beach town located on the Caribbean coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It has a rich history that blends ancient Mayan culture with modern tourism development.
Pre-Columbian Era
Maya Civilization: The area around Akumal was originally inhabited by the Maya, one of the most advanced ancient civilizations in Mesoamerica. Coastal settlements near Akumal were part of trade routes linking cities across the Yucatán and Central America.
The region likely served as a stopover point or minor trading post, especially due to its proximity to important Mayan cities like Tulum and Coba.
20th Century Development
1958 – Founding of Modern Akumal: The modern town of Akumal was founded in 1958 by Pablo Bush Romero, a Mexican businessman, diver, and archaeologist. He and his family were passionate about marine life and underwater archaeology, especially shipwrecks along the coast.
He established Akumal as a community for divers and marine researchers, making it one of the first recreational diving destinations in Mexico.
Centro Ecológico Akumal (CEA): Later, the area became known for its ecological and conservation efforts. The CEA was founded to protect the region's natural resources, including the coral reefs and sea turtles that nest on its beaches.
