About: Just across a tiny bridge at Turner Beach is Captiva Island, the sister island to the larger Sanibel Island. Turner Beach is a terrific site to find the colorful shells for which these islands are known, as well as to capture that prize fish. At Redfish Pass, the beach extends five miles to Captiva Island's northernmost point. A picturesque drive past enormous cacti, vibrant bougainvilleas, and other tropical flora along a stretch of sea and sand from the bridge at Turner Beach leads to "downtown" Captiva, which is more of a village than a town.

HISTORY OF CAPTIVA ISLAND
Captiva Island, located just north of Sanibel Island on Florida’s Gulf Coast in Lee County, is a small but historically rich barrier island known for its natural beauty, seashell-strewn beaches, and colorful legends. Though Captiva is now a tranquil tourist destination, its past includes Native American settlements, pirate myths, agricultural experiments, hurricanes, and resort development.
Pre-Colonial Era
Calusa Indians were the earliest known inhabitants. This maritime people thrived in the estuaries and islands of Southwest Florida, building shell mounds and fishing communities.
Captiva and surrounding islands were part of their extensive territory, with evidence of shell tools, mounds, and settlements.
Pirate Legends
Captiva's name is often linked to the legend of José Gaspar, a mythical pirate said to have held female captives on the island—hence the name “Captiva.”
